“Patches Welcome” - Open Source Rant

Personal pet peeves of mine

1. Projects that tell you “patches welcome” and then completely ignore the patch. My solution is simply to whine to the right people and get karma to commit whatever is needed… but that’s not a GOOD fix

2. Ignored bugs just because their OS is windows - especially if they have patches attached (if a windows users sends a patch they generally know what the hell they’re doing)

3. Bad code that fails on stricter compilers (for gods sake, mac people, all us windows people manage to get the right line endings into CVS, what is your problem?? and don’t use index, use strchr…jeez)

4. People who think Windows doesn’t deserve open source software - come on people, want to know the best way to bring someone over from the dark side? Get them using firefox for mail, thunderbird for email, pidgin for IM, OpenOffice for daily stuff, GIMP for general image editing. Then when they balk at upgrading to Vista you simply switch them to linux, and because all the stuff they use is the same they NEVER NOTICE THE DIFFERENCE. (There is a method to my madness)
