Stomach and Kids, Code and Fiction

ugh - I was all set for a nice start to the new year, but I’ve just had loads of fun the last few days

First of all, we’re STILL doing that remodeling project… (started last FEBRUARY) My husband had to cut out part of the old cast iron stack in the basement and tie in new pvc drains - fun fun. That means we had/have one working toilet - in the nasty basement, and the kitchen sink for plumbing.

Second, it’s back to school time. And of course my oldest is less than cooperative about returning to the old grind. And he whines incessently about his two chores (load/unload the dishwasher and clean his room) it’s not like he has to mow the yard or wash loads of laundry.

Third we have the fun of sickness - my youngest still has a cold that he got over christmas and he’s been HORRIBLY naughty today. From playing with the contents of his diaper (ewww) to hitting his brothers and biting and sneaking candy and stealing things. In addition I have a nasty stomach upset. Makes for an unhappy day, especially when I have to lug my fat, pregnant butt down stairs to use the toilet…a lot.

Well have I whined enough?

I’ve been working on the test framework for kalfu - right now everything is kind of mushed together in one class - since I decided to go the phpt style route for testing files (open a file, read sections, write a temp and execute it, prepare against another section). After I get this working properly I’ll split off the configuration, reporting, and cgi portions of the testing system to make it more robust (I’d personally like some autoreporting and even allow emailed reports)- fun fun. For now I’m down to the last little bit of tweaking to have it up and running. The reason for the annoyance is I need to have some unit tests set up for the Kalfu db drivers/statement classes/managers et al. I’ll eventually write tests for other stuff, but the db drivers HAVE to work the same way. Fun.

As far as the core of Kalfu - I could probably get it up and running now since the db api for basic functionality (query, exec, prepared statements) is up and running great. That would mean tackling more of the activerecord class I’ve been working on, but I suppose I should stop being lazy and get on it (the test system/db driver stuff is typical of me, I don’t want to work on something so I put it off and do something else…although the test stuff was put off to do something else initially. I always work my way back to the beginning)

As far as my poor new years resolutions go - about the only one I’ve been real good about is posting to this blog.
I haven’t done ANY writing at all - although I DID screw around last night reading fanfiction again. I have done some cleaning. If I spend some time today and clean at least one thing I’ll feel all right - I’ve been trying to do one thing every day. I suppose I’m also still on track for number 4 (lose weight) because hey, I still have three months before the baby is born.

Speaking of fiction - I’ve found an incredible number of “writers” (notice the quotes) on fanfiction.net who are abominable. I used to be able to find an average of one good story for every ten bad ones - but that number is rapidly increasing. Also there’s a much larger number of “writers” who refuse to take any type of critcism on their story - “I’ve seen good stories as short as mine” when length is the complaint. “I’ve read good stories with so and so out of character” - that’s fine, doesn’t mean YOU can get away with it. ARGH…

I suppose I should stop procrastinating and get some writing done…but first I have to corral my kids and get something on the table for dinner. I feel bad enough though it’ll be something small and I’ll probably go to bed early.
